About the Dachshund
Dachshunds come in standard and miniature sizes, with standards around 9 to 12 kilos and miniatures under 5, and in three coats: smooth, wire and long haired. Colours run from red and black and tan to dapple and brindle. The long back and short legs are the point of the breed, bred to go down badger setts, and the bravery that job needed is still there. They are stubborn, loud for their size, devoted to one or two people and suspicious of the postman. Owners joke that you do not own a Dachshund, you negotiate with one, and that stairs and sofas are a constant worry. Sausage dog, wiener, doxie or dachsie, the nicknames are as affectionate as the dog is opinionated.
